Luciano Darderi: A character amidst the statues of Rome

The 2026 Rome Masters 1000 had an Italian representative who stole the show, and it wasn't Jannik Sinner. Despite the immense talent and dominance of the world number one, it was Luciano Darderi who brought genuine smiles to the faces of the Italian crowd.

Neither Cobolli, Musetti, nor Berrettini made it to the semifinals of the tournament; it was Darderi who reached the semifinals. After a comfortable first round against Yannick Hanfmann, the 24-year-old's comeback began against Tommy Paul, where he achieved his first comeback victory; the following rounds against Alexander Zverev and Rafael Jódar brought more excitement and long games, pushing him to his limits, but also resulting in a 6-0 in both matches.

The semifinal against the consistent Casper Ruud was different; the double 6-1 result for the Norwegian almost explains the match. However, beyond that, Darderi caused controversy by unintentionally ignoring the child he was supposed to enter the court with; on the court, Luciano even tried to react in the second set, but his performance was marked by interactions with the crowd and a rush when serving.

An interesting run for the Argentinian-Italian in this major tournament, who already has a title to his name this year at the ATP tournament in Viña del Mar, Chile.
