Serena: expectations that only a legend can generate
High expectations and perhaps a reality check: that's what tennis fans and admirers of Serena Williams seem to have felt last Tuesday (02).
It all started with the news published by "The Athletic" that the American, owner of 23 Grand Slam titles, had requested to be reinstated in the anti-doping program of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
However, hours after the news broke and various rumors circulated on social media, the former athlete herself made a point of using social media to make it clear that she will not be returning. Serena stated on her X account: "Omg yall I'm not coming back. This wildfire is crazy".
At 44, the star is focused on projects related to fashion, business, and philanthropy; in addition, Serena also makes a point of showing her daily life with her two daughters and her husband. Tennis, therefore, will always be a part of her life, but it doesn't seem to be the number one priority in her life currently.
On the other hand, the fact that older sister Venus Williams made interesting appearances in the 2025 WTA season may ignite hope among fans of the pair. A possible union between the two for the 2028 Olympics has not been ruled out by "The Athletic" itself - only time will tell.
Ultimately, 319 weeks as the world's number one will never go unnoticed, much less all the presence and charm of a star.
From a tactical standpoint, in a women's tennis that is increasingly powerful and fast-paced, the challenge would likely be undeniable. However, we're talking about a Williams sister, and if Venus surprised Karolina Muchová at the US Open at age 45... what would Serena be capable of doing on her favorite court?
Perhaps time will tell...
